Kauri Bay Boomrock is set on a stunning private 500-acre Clevedon property with expansive coastal views over the Hauraki Gulf.
The Hauraki Gulf (just outside Kauri Bay in front of us) was a thoroughfare and subsequently did become a battle zone for control between Ngai Tai of the local area and Ngati Maru of Thames and tribes further south looking to venture north.
The 500 acre property has a small pa site recognised as a stronghold during this time – on the hill to the East while looking out to Kauri Bay.
The Ngai Tai are direct decedents of the Tainui Waka which travelled from Polynesia to NZ as one of the first to do so over 800 years ago. The Wairoa River (Te Wairoa – translated to mean Long River) was named by the Ngai Tai and they moved throughout the area gathering after setting up there
Prior to any settlement the area was considerably different – swampy and wet – but did host Bush Moa, Mantell’s Moa and also the Giant Moa.
It’s amazing how things have changed!
